Sergej studies at the Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow and receives his first contract at the State Theatre there.
A scholarship of the Pierino Ambrosoli Foundation leads him at the vocational Swiss Ballet School (SBBS) in Zurich.
After an engagement at the Dresden State Opera, Sergei Ignatiev is engaged by Heinz Spoerli at the ballet company of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in1995.
Youri Vàmos renews his contract when he receives the ballet direction in 1996. Here he dances in different solo rolls in choreographies of Youri Vàmos (Romeo and Julia), Hans van Manen (Chamber Ballet) and Heinz Spoerli (Scenes).

2008 Sergej taught ballett at different ballet schools.
In 2009 he continued his career as a dancer in the production of "The Merry Widow" the Dusseldorf Opera.
Since the 2010/2011 season Sergej works as master of training and rehearsal at the Volksoper Vienna State Ballet under the directorship of Manuel Legris.
